2 1/2", 6.3cm. Gorgeous specimen! A splendid example of radiating Pyrite from the coal and shale beds of Illinois. This wonderfully unusual crystallization of Pyrite, a Sulfide of Iron, occurs only rarely in nature. These specimens are often referred to as 'Suns' or 'Dollars' because of their unusual shape. Traditionally, Pyrite forms Isometric crystals (Cubes, Octohedrons, or Pyritohedrons). The specimens from Sparta, Illinois, form radiating, flattened discs.

To date, there is no consensus on how exactly these specimens were formed. One theory says that fluids rich in FeS2 flow down through cracks in the coal beds until the crack comes to an end, and the Pyrite slowly crystallizes in the horizontal seam between two beds. Another theory suggests that these are actually fossil remains of an unknown, ancient creature, whose cast has been replaced over time by Pyrite.

Regardless of depositional genesis, these Pyrite specimens are highly sought after by collectors of geological specimens, and this one, in particular, is a perfect size for jewelry and display. Specimen comes with stand and label, ready for your display.
