1 1/4" x 1", 3.2cm x 2.5cm. Amazing straw-yellow colored Rutile crystals, an Oxide of Titanium, on a matrix of Hematite/Ilmenite (Iron Oxide and Iron, Titanium Oxide, respectively). Beautiful free-standing Rutile, showing classic 'sixling' twinning, on a minor matrix of black Hematite/Ilmenite.
For a long time it was thought that the black mineral associated with the Rutile in this deposit was only Hematite, until it was discovered that some of the specimens did not give a red streak when tested. Further analysis revealed the mineral to be a mix of Hematite and Ilmenite.
